CAMIGUIN, Mambajao, Jan 12 (PIA) –- Heaving more triumphs over the years, the island now ranks among the top tourist destinations in the country as it celebrates its 44th founding anniversary.
Camiguingnons welcome the festivity with colorful parade, sports, and musical concert every 7th day of January.
Politically, the island used to be part of the mainland proper of eastern Misamis Oriental and was declared as a separate province in 1968.
Since then, the province has been able to sustain its economy, that even during the global financial crisis it continued to attract investments in infrastructure, trade, and agriculture.
It managed to post a modest increase of 0.05 percent last year, with total investment amounting to P230 million justified by the establishment of some 199 new micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
In his State of the Province Address (SOPA) delivered during the charter day celebration, Governor Jesus Jurdin M. Romualdo spelled that tourism remains to be the priority sector of his administration.
He said the increase in tourist arrival primarily contributed to the island’s economy.
Romualdo vowed to develop and improve its destinations by maintaining the island’s peace and order situation, as well as, ensuring the protection and preservation of its environment.
In order to attain “continuity in progress,” where the administration’s slogan currently treads on, the governor moves to focus also on the enhancement of agriculture and fishery productivity, improvement of basic health and social services, quality and affordability of basic education, improvement of infrastructure, solid waste management, livelihood and employment, disaster risk reduction and management, good governance, and fiscal reforms.
For the past years, the province has been awarded and recognized as the best performing local government unit (LGU) in the Essential Health Care Package (EHCP) program for children and just recently, it also received the “Seal of Good Housekeeping Award” from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for investing considerably in transparency and accountability, taking its rightful place in one of the pillars in nation building.
