Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-hibok Natural Monument soon to be ASEAN Heritage Park

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, October 23 (PIA) – Camiguin’s Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-hibok Natural Monument will soon be declared  as ASEAN Heritage Park after it passed the evaluation conducted by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.

This was announced by Depertment of Environment and Natural Resources 10 (DENR-10) Regional Director Ruth M. Tawantawan during the 7thRegional Management Conference and 2016 Pre-Reprogramming held in Cagayan de Oro City recently.

Director Tawantawan said the DENR 10, the local government of Camiguin and other stakeholders are working together in the protection and conservation of the natural monument.

Region 10 is the home of two ASEAN Heritage Parks namely Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park in Bukidnon and Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park in Misamis Occidental.  These areas showcased high conservation importance, uniqueness and biodiversity.

At present there are 35 ASEAN Heritage Parks and seven are found in the Philippines.  The establishment of ASEAN Heritage Parks aims to generate greater awareness, pride, appreciation, enjoyment and conservation of the ASEAN region’s rich natural resources.

Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-hibok Natural Monument was declared as a protected area on March 9, 2004  through  Presidential Proclamation No.  570 with a total area of 2,227  hectares and buffer zone of 1422  hectares.  It comprises the municipalities of Mambajao, Mahinog, Sagay and Catarman.

The protected area is managed by a Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) which is chaired by Regional Director Ruth M. Tawantawan and Governor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo as co-chairman.  Members are representatives from the academe, local government units and civil society groups.

Meanwhile, Director Tawantawan disclosed during the same forum the accomplishment of  the region.  On National Greening Program (NGP), Region 10  has planted 9,711,500  seedlings in 10,953.50 hectares of forestlands from January to October 2, 2015.

On Mangrove and Beach Forest Development Project, she said that the DENR 10 has established 297.14 hectares plantations on the same period.  These areas are located in Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.

She disclosed that DENR 10 ranked no. 1 in Patent Processing and Issuance  with 3,018 patents issued covering 3,142.27  hectares.  The annual target is 3,000 patents issued with an area of 2,516 hectares. With the support of personnel and partners, Director Tawantawan is hopeful that the DENR 10 will accomplish all its targets before November 2015.

The 7th  Regional Management Conference and 2015 Pre-Reprogramming was attended by regional officials, provincial/community DENR officers, accountants, planning officers, administrative officers  and other staffs.  (LDC-DENR-RPAO)
