SAGAY, Camiguin, July 31 (PIA)— To comprehensively manage, address and effectively reduce the drivers and threats of degradation of the coastal and marine ecosystem, the provincial government here launched the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program (CMEMP) on July 28 at Barangay Bugang, Sagay.
The local government here said that such is implemented in the area to achieve and promote sustainability of ecosystem services, food security and climate change resiliency for the benefit of the present and future generations.
Among the program components include the marine protected area (MPA) networking establishment and strengthening, biodiversity-friendly social enterprise development, capacity, building, technical assistance, knowledge management, social marketing and management, and monitoring and evaluation.
To guarantee smooth and successful implementation of the program, the local government commits to establish a well-connected network of MPAs to ensure effective and sustainable management of the island’s coastal and marine resources.
As support to the CMEMP, the local government will also implement the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources to contribute to food security and to improve human well-being of the coastal communities, and effectively reduce threats and factors of degradation on coastal and marine caused by destructive fishing practices and habitat destruction.
It is also the aim of the local government to enhance the formation of positive values among all stakeholders including the youth through shared responsibilities in sustainable management of coastal and marine resources and habitats, and develop and/or enhance the skills and expertise of concerned Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government staff as well as the other stakeholder on coastal and marine management.(RTP/PIA10)
