CAMIGUIN, Jan. 4 (PIA)—Planting 10,095 tree seedlings in its five towns, the province kicks off its 51st Founding Anniversary with “Ingmahal Ko Na Basak (My Beloved Land),” a simultaneous municipal tree planting on January 4.
“We are planting 2,019 trees per municipality and we prioritized the watershed areas,” Provincial Governor Maria Luisa Romualdo said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) provided about 4,000 forest tree seedlings to build balance with the 5,000 bamboo seedlings provided by the Provincial Government of Camiguin.
The forest tree seedligs include the local Bayok, Dao and Bakan.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) provided over 1,000 coconut seedlings to cover the remaining trees needed to complete the 10,095 target trees. They have also secured 2,072 bags of organic fertilizer to ensure growth and sustainability of the greening program.
Aside from the coconut seedlings, PCA also provided technical assistance in crafting the layout of the planting activity; making sure that coconut trees are intercropped to improve the incomes of small coconut farmers.
Bamboo seedlings are planted with 10 meters spacing and in between, are the forest tree seedlings which are distanced at 5 meters, depending on the terrain.
As to watershed protection, Mambajao Mayor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo said planting trees along the rivers reduces water pollution, provides clean drinking water systems, preserves valuable ecosystem services, and beautifies the natural landscape of communities.
“Kini kay mga river mani siya, small rivers kinahanglan na siya nimo protektahan. Tamnan na nimo or else mu-widen ni siya, madaot ang atong corals (Since this is a river, small rivers, you need to protect them. You plant trees around it or else, such river will widen and eventually destroy the corals),” Mayor Romualdo said while participating in the tree planting at Barangay Baylao, Sitio Abbu, Mambajao.
In sustaining the program, Governor Romualdo said the barangays are given the power to ensure protection of the trees planted in their areas. Furthermore, people from Camiguin can expect the annual conduct of the activity during the province’s founding anniversary celebration as it is also enclosed in the environmental code of Camiguin.
