CAMIGUIN, January 8 (PIA) – With the theme, “Small Province, Big Future,” the province of Camiguin celebrated its 50th founding anniversary with festive events, creative contests, awarding of achievers, grand parade, live concert, fireworks display and presentation of the State of the Province Address on January 4-7.
League of Municipal Mayors President and Mambajao Mayor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo said that the 50th Araw ng Camiguin highlights the pouring in of more jobs and investments in the province thus, “There is always future in Camiguin.” He also said that the provincial government is looking forward to more young Camiguingnons coming home as they will no longer seek for employment in other areas.
The celebration kicked off with the grand opening and ribbon cutting of various booths that feature the products of Camiguin and the services of national line agencies on January 4 at Ugmad Site.
To showcase the talents and inspire the youth to take part in the undertakings of the province, numerous contests were held from January 4 to 6 and these include the Inter-Elementary and High School Spelling Bee held at Ugmad Site, and Inter-High School and Kapisanan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) Trashure Competition where participants were asked to creatively produce necklaces, bracelets and other accessories out of trash.
High school students also competed in the charcoal painting, extemporaneous speech, flower arrangement, mob dance and marching band contests.
The first day of the celebration is further made vibrant with the inter-elementary dance sports competition, night fun run and live band presentation.
The municipalities of the province also exhibited their talents in cooking lechon (roasted pork) at the Ugmad Site aside from displaying their products in the Pista sa Nayon.
To further uphold good local governance, the provincial government launched the Inter-Office 5s Competition and Cong. PPR Memorial Awards for Good Local Governance. Exemplary municipal local government units (MLGUs), barangay achievers, agricultural achievers, partner national government agencies and non-government organizations of the provincial local government were also recognized.
Moreover, the provincial government also held the ground breaking ceremony of the new provincial capitol building location at Lacas, Mambajao with a total allocation of P250 million and unveiled the 50th Camiguin Founding Anniversary Marker on January 7.
Another highlight of the celebration is the grand parade of umbrellas of various national line agencies, schools, civil society organizations, businesses and non-government organizations in the province.
The Araw ng Camiguin was then capped with the State of the Province Address of Provincial Governor Maria Luisa Romualdo, fireworks display and a live concert.
With the programs, activities, projects and endless opportunities in the province, the provincial governor is optimistic that greater things await the Camiguingnons for the years to come saying, “I am looking forward for a brighter and bigger future ahead of us.”(Recthie T. Paculba/PIA10)
