CAMIGUIN, Jan. 6 (PIA)—Securing over Php72 million budget for road construction and rehabilitation, attaining 688,587 tourist arrivals in 2018, and improving health and nutritional status among school-aged children, the Provincial Government of Camiguin bares 2018 key strategies that lead to making the island one of the most beautiful and peaceful islands in the country.

Investing in human capital

Believing that the most important economic resource lies in human capital, the local government addressed the oral, physical and mental health of its people. In 2018, the province has attained 85 percent orally fit children and attended to 133 mentally-ill patients, making Camiguin the first province that gives importance to the usually neglected health problem in the country.

Romualdo also cited the significant improvement of the zero open defecation (ZOD) program implementation in the province from 18 percent compliance in 2017 to 79 percent in 2018 highlighting the 15 barangays in Camiguin which were already declared ZOD areas.

The strict implementation of the Smoke-Free Camiguin has also changed the face of the island from a top tourist destination to a healthy haven for tourists and residents as it accorded the Red Orchid Award.

Furthermore, with the aid of the Department of Health (DOH), over Php116 million was allocated to improve the facilities and services of Camiguin General Hospital (CGH).

The marginalized sector that includes the displaced individuals/families, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries, children, women, elderly and differently-abled persons attained immediate response from the local government which allocated Php12,757,878 in CY 2018 to cater to their needs.

Securing economic progress

Contributing about Php35,735,000 to the Php72,566,830 requirement to complete the opening of interconnected routes and rehabilitation of roads, the local government now assures not only the ease of accessibility to tourist sites but also the speedy transportation of farm products to the market.

Locals tourists will enjoy the new and improved sports complex as the construction of such facility will soon reach its completion. Also, swimming enthusiasts will get a chance to hone their skills once the swimming pool at Mahinog will be completed.

“And I did not do all these alone. With myself, alone, I am powerless. However, with you, marching with me, united in heart and mind, we made things happen to assure that progress never stops for a clean and beautiful Camiguin,” Romualdo said.

To brace and further advance such feats, Romualdo urged Camiguingnons to implement the Water Code and respect the mandate on the easement, keep the quality of coastal water to the highest standard and the forest land pristine, and take care of the heritage sites that are treasures recognized by the national government.
